A GUIDE TO Microbiome Issues

Our microbiome is a complex system full of nearly 39 trillion bacterial species. As you can imagine it is ever changing. It is important to think of your gut biome as a garden in which there are many different species living there and different environmental factors can effect each species as well as introduction to new species can effect existing species. It constantly needs to be paid attention to and adjusted according to new symptoms. Eventually, you can hope to find what works right for your unique microbiome and adjust accordingly.

WHAT ARE MICROBIOME ISSUES?

Our microbiome is composed of a collection of microorganisms nearly 300-500 different kinds of bacteria composed of 2 million genes that help protect our gut from other living organisms that enter our body, digest our food and play an important role in our well-being. Every person’s gut biome is unique and is composed from your mother’s microbiota, the environment you were exposed to at birth, diet and lifestyle. The bacteria live throughout our body but also line our digestive system, intestines and colon. Our microbiome affects everything from our metabolism, bowel movements, immune system and can also be tied to many other health issues such as diabetes, obesity, depression and colon cancer. Therefore if someone is experiencing microbiome issues these disturbances can cause a plethora of gut problems that have a snowball effect.

WHAT CAUSES MICROBIOME ISSUES?

Unfortunately, there are many reasons why someone’s microbiome can be disrupted and cause issues. Microbiome issues can be the result of stress, lack of sleep, food intolerances or allergies, medications, infection or chronic conditions. Oftentimes it can be a combination of causes that create the microbiome issue. Testing is the only way to find out what the root cause of a person’s microbiome issues are. Once you have taken a microbiome test it gives you a starting point as to what could be causing any symptoms you are experiencing.

There are specific gastrointestinal microbiome tests that test for: inflammation, microbial activity, diversity, metabolic fitness and gut lining health. Additionally you can test for mitochondrial and cellular health which would give you an idea of how your cells are carrying out basic cellular functions with aging and metabolism, cellular stress, cardiovascular and brain health. Lastly, testing energy levels and overall stress responses are good indicators for the impact stress has on your guy and how your body meets the demands you’re placing on your body. These tests can also indicate which stress triggers or resilience you have that may come from your lifestyle or toxins produced by your microbiome.

WHAT ARE SYMPTOMS OF MICROBIOME ISSUES?

Symptoms of an unhealthy microbiome can be varying from person to person but some common symptoms are:

  • Upset stomach – this can include stomach issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramping, stomach pain and heartburn. This is usually caused by the microbiome being out of sync as a balanced gut with healthy flora has less issues digesting foods and eliminating waste.
  • Unintentional Weight Changes – another sign of a unhealthy or imbalanced gut is if you experience unintentional weight gain or lose without changing your diet or exercise regime. This imbalance makes it difficult for your body to absorb nutrients, regulate blood sugar and store fat. A common cause of this could be from SIBO.
  • Sleep Disturbances – when our gut is out of sorts our hormones can be affected which ultimately affect our sleep. Serotonin, which is largely produced in our gut and affects our mood and sleep, can get out of sync. Chronic sleep issues also put you at risk for fibromyalgia.
  • Skin Issues – a damaged gut can contribute to skin conditions like eczema or breakouts. This is largely caused from food allergies or sensitivities.
  • Autoimmune conditions – an unhealthy gut can increase overall inflammation in our body, which can trigger autoimmune conditions.
  • Food Sensitivities – this is when the gut responds to a certain food with inflammation and makes it difficult to digest the food.

HOW DO YOU TREAT MICROBIOME ISSUES?

Treating microbiome issues can be complicated because it is important to understand what the root cause is. Each symptom can possibly be from a different issue that is contributing to the overall deterioration of your healthy gut flora. What does this mean for treatment? It is important to test what is happening within your gut and given that our microbiome is ever changing these tests may need to repeated. Based on the test results treatments may include:

  • Eliminating food sensitivities or allergies
  • Removing common inflammatory foods
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Increasing water intake
  • Reducing Caffeine and Alcohol
  • Increasing vitamin intake
  • Increasing pre/probiotics
  • Improving Sleep such as avoiding screens at night and meditation
  • Reviewing current fitness regime
  • Reviewing common toxicities that you could be effecting your gut biome
